What’s the Matter with the Teaching of Grammar

“More importantly, Troy and I have been looking at what our professional organizations – including the National Council of Teachers of English and one of its constituent groups, the Assembly for English Grammar – as well as many of our colleagues have been saying for many years: rote grammar instruction doesn’t work. So, before we do anything to talk about technology and grammar instruction, I want to outline what I’ve learned about the teaching of grammar and how it has informed the stance I take today.”
